Hello friends. February seems to have come and gone too quickly.
Since the start of the new year seems to be a time where people want to learn new skills or perfect old ones, I wanted to share with you about two really incredible courses for surface pattern design. Now, I am not pushing anything to anyone. I am not an affiliate, I don’t earn money and neither of these women asked me to write this. I don’t typically like spending money on things like masterminds and courses because they are usually an absolute waste of my time and money. However, these are two I fully endorse. If you are looking to get into surface pattern design these are two that should be on your radar.
I’ve been a part of Shine since Mindy created it. Mindy pours her heart into this group. Filled with tons of information to help with your surface pattern business. From branding to your ideal customer to licensing. She also shares a lot of art lessons, color palettes and so much more. If you are someone who is dabbling or thinking about making a go at surface pattern design part or full-time, I truly recommend checking out her wonderful membership.
Erin Kendal runs Power Sellers Academy. Power Sellers focuses on the business of Spoonflower. When I say it is jam packed with priceless video lessons, pdf’s, shop critiques and more. I am not exaggerating, it is clear Erin pours everything into this membership. Her trend reports are incredible and worth the membership alone. But what is truly special is the amazing community she has built. Every designer is so supportive and uplifting of each other.
What’s new from me
I’ve been a designing maniac. From my coastal bohemian classics to more novelty designs taking me way out of my comfort zone. I am learning those are good for me to practice my art skills, keep up with trends and who knows, maybe those will be something I get super into in the future. You never know! I long ago learned never say never- it always bites me in the butt.
I am headed into surgery here in a few hours and have a 6 week recovery. My hope is to have lots of time to start planning and maybe filming portions of shibori mini courses I want to put into the world this summer. I am also going to work on redesigning and writing my Intro to Shibori booklet that I know a lot of you have already if you ever took a dye class with me or purchased a shibori dye kit from me. I will have ebook and physical book copies for sale this summer- so whatever is easier for you.
If there is anything else you want to see from me please leave me a message!
Things for you to enjoy
If you are a lover of art and pattern design I have two books (new to me) that you will find to be absolutely stunning and really quite interesting.
I know I have mentioned in previous newsletters how much I am loving this podcast, Intoxicating History. Combining love of history, wine, spirits and more.
I don’t know if I mentioned, I casually started a little YouTube series. I don’t post them often- they are quite a lot of work- but have big plans for a lot more this year. The series is called Tastes and Toasts- where I share about a wine I enjoy while I bake or cook. It’s meant to let you enjoy being in the kitchen more and of course learn more about the Portuguese wines I love so much.
If you are thinking of getting into surface pattern design, I created a Benable list to make it easier! I will add resources all the time.
